The Grand Canyon State, is a unique place; the weather in southern Arizona is so warm, that one could wear shorts all year round. In fact, I do! This is because I live in the AZ desert.
Arizona has many, many diverse areas that have different climates and environmental landscapes. The northern part of Arizona, around Flagstaff, the Grand Canyon, as well as the White Mountains on the eastern border, get more rain. Furthermore, the higher elevations in these areas makes them considerably cooler than the southern region of the state. On the west and south sides of the state, are the lower deserts, where it’s much warmer. Yuma, Lake Havasu City, Quartzsite and Parker all are hotter than Phoenix and Tucson (found in the upper desert). The north eastern part of the state, along the Utah border, features stunning red rock formations, such as Monument Valley. Sedona, near the center of the state, also features stunning red rocks.
This diverse climate and landscape also bring with it a diversity of activities. There are several ski resorts in Northern Arizona. Additionally, there are excellent fishing lakes in the White Mountains, and superb desert canyons in the lower deserts of Arizona. The western part of Arizona is complimented by the Colorado River, while the east part has diverse climates and landscapes.
The land of Arizona is approximately 25% Indian reservation. Arizona is a fabulous place to experience Native culture, with many pow wows and festivals open to the public. The Hopi and Navajo are famous for their jewelry, as well as basket and blanket weaving. Visits to the 1,000-year-old Hopi Mesa communities, can be arranged, as well as tours around the Navajo reservation.
A visit to the San Xavier Del Bac Catholic Mission, on the Tohono O’odham Indian reservation, is a must-see when in Tucson. It’s a melding of both native and Hispanic culture, dating back more than 300 years.
In addition to a large Native American population, Arizona also has an old, well established Hispanic population. Arizona has a distinct Hispanic culture, primarily derived from the Mexican state of Sonora. Mexican cuisine in Arizona has some distinct qualities, and in IMHO, Arizona has the best Mexican food!
With the diverse population, from a lot of different places, also brings many different values to the state. Arizona news and talk stations on the radio exhibit this. Political views tend to be to the conservative side, but there is are liberal areas, such as Tempe and Tucson. Arizona is also home to the Air America radio network, a heavily liberal talk radio network, syndicated throughout the country. The leading talk radio station (according to records and radio dot com) is usually 550 AM KFYI, a conservative station, featuring hosts such as Hannity and Limbaugh. KTAR, an FM news-talk station at 92.3, claims to be in the independent, but leans a little conservative.
Internet opinion and news forums, like ArizonaNewsTalk.com, become popular forums for those who wish to discuss current news and events in the Grand Canyon State. There’s a lot going on in Arizona, you should take an RV trip and see the state.
Many pro golf courses complement the state, it’s a great place for your short-haired pets, and the crime in the rural areas is relatively low.
Arizona is a perfect place to be!
