California is the most populated state in the United States, and it also has the third largest land area. Los Angeles, is the state’s most populous city and the country’s second largest city after New York City. California’s vast geography ranges from the Sierra Nevada mountains in the east, to the Pacific Coast in the west, the Redwood forests of the northwest, to the Mojave Desert in the southeast. In the center of the state is the Central Valley, which is a major agricultural area. California has both the highest point, Mount Whitney, and the lowest point, Death Valley, in the contiguous United States. Earthquakes are common throughout California, because of the state’s location along the Pacific Ring of Fire. About 37,000 earthquakes are recorded each year, but most are too small to be felt.

California is regarded as a global trendsetter in both pop culture and politics, and is the home of Hollyood, the birthplace of the hippie counter culture, and Silicon Valley. The state’s economy is centered on finance, government, real estate, technology, and professional, scientific and technical business services. Although only 1.5% of the state’s economy, California’s agriculture industry has the highest output of any U.S. state. If it were a country, California would be the 6th largest economy in the world and the 35th most populous.
