If you’re building out a van or a cargo trailer for travel, you’ll need more than a few things to get the job done. Naturally, solar panels top the list. However, you’ll also need to consider your bed, kitchen, and bathroom. You may also want to add a desk. With this in mind, we’ve assembled a list of items from our Amazon affiliate links that you might need.

Solar System

One of the first things people consider for a van or trailer build is a solar system. Usually, 300-400 watts is sufficient for a van or a cargo trailer. Moreover, buying an RV solar system kit is usually the easiest way to go.

Lithium Batteries

If you’re building a system from scratch, you will likely choose lithium batteries. However, if you’re building out a van, proceed with caution if you want to connect your lithium batteries to the vehicle alternator. If you plan to do this, you’ll need additional parts. Read this article to find out more about what you’ll need to connect lithium batteries to your alternator.

Solar “Generators”

A solar generator is not really a generator. Rather, it’s a lithium battery encased with a charge controller and inverter. They typically have several USB ports and AC and DC plugins.

If you don’t have the electrical skill to wire a your van or trailer, a solar generator is a great option. Just be sure to place it close to where you’ll need it. For example, place it near where you will be using your laptop.

Typically, vans and converted cargo trailers do not have black tanks. Rather, composting or cassette toilets are the way to go. But, with that in mind, please dispose of your waste responsibly!
